Brad Voth is another former EIHL heavyweight enforcer who started out his career in the tough WHL as a Junior.
Voth played 215 times for the 'Medicine Hat Tigers' in the Western Hockey League between 1997-2001, posting 785 penalty minutes, and fighting 67 times against names such as Steve MacIntyre, Eric Godard, Colton Orr and Derek Boogaard, who all went on to be top enforcers in the NHL. Voth as a Junior also fought a lot of tough guys who would play in the EIHL like Jason Beckett, Mike Egener, David Kaczowka, Graham Belak, Robin Gomez, Ryan Jorde and his future coach of the Cardiff Devils Gerad Adams.
At the start of 2001 Brad played a few games with the NHL's St Louis Blues in pre-season, before splitting his first Pro season 2001-2002 between the AHL's Worcester IceCats and the ECHL's Peoria Rivermen. Brad's rookie season saw him fighting guys like Trevor Ettinger, Andrew Peters, Mel Angelstad & Rob Skrlac.ect
Brad again played for both Worcester in the AHL and Peoria in the ECHL the following season 2002-2003 and he lead the Peoria Rivermen in penalty minutes with (283 PIMS). Voth fought the great Derek Boogaard again in 2003 and also dropped the gloves with top enforcers Mike Varhaug, Martin Grenier, Graham Belak and David Koci in his (24) fights in both leagues.
2003-2004 Brad Voth signed for the Columbus Cottonmouths in the ECHL. Brad's team-mates this season included two guys who would also go on to be enforcers in the EIHL, Rumun Ndur & Carlyle Lewis. The forth enforcer in the Cottonmouths line up in 03/04 was Mitch Fritz to complete quite a line up of tough guys. Brad fought 12 times this season including fights against future Nottingham Panthers coach Corey Neilson, and Belfast Giants tough guy Shawn Skiehar. The next season 2004-2005 Brad played 29 games for Texas Wildcatters in the ECHL fighting nine times. He fought future team mate Doug MacIver twice, future Panthers tough guy Jason Beckett twice and also fought the toughest guy in the ECHL at that time Steve MacIntyre.
2005-2006 saw Brad Voth coming across the pond to play his first of many season's in the EIHL with the Cardiff Devils. Voth first fight of his Devils career saw him taking on a former team-mate Trevor Baker who was now playing with the London Racers. Voth would go on to lead the EIHL in fighting majors in his 1st season with (22) fights and he also led the Devils in penalty minutes with (263 PIMS). Voth fought Andre Payette, Jeremy Cornish, Fredrik Oduya, Jason Bowen, Brad Cruikshank, Jason Robinson, Paul Ferone and Graham Belak during 05/06. Voth also helped the Devils win the C.C cup.
Brad was back in Cardiff with the Devils in 2006-2007, Again leading the Devils in penalty minutes (253) and fights (16). Voth had a couple of fights with the leagues toughest guy Brett Clouthier, while also fighting enforcers Andre Payette another four times, Shawn Skiehar twice, Regan Darby, Rumun Ndur and Jason Robinson. Voth was also making a name for himself in the EIHL as a hard hitting player by now.
2007-2008 and Brad had a stand out season for the Devils hitting 24 goals in 50 games, while also leading the Devils in penalty minutes with (288) and fights (16). Voth started the season with a loss in his first fight to the tough Jeremy Cornish but he would go on to record wins over enforcers Ryan Shmyr of the Panthers and the Vipers Andre Payette twice, and also had wins in fights over the Steelers Steve Munn and the Vipers Derek Campbell & Jeff Hutchins. This was also the season that Voth became a hate figure among the Sheffield Steelers fan base for his hit on Ashley Tait. Voth received a six-match ban for the hit after leaving Steelers forward Ashley Tait with severe concussion.
Voth then picked up a long suspension early on in 2008-2009 season after a fight with Randy Dagenais on Sep 7th. After the game the Sheffield Steelers put in a complaint to the League for what they claimed was a sucker punch and slash by Voth on Dagnais just before the two fought. Dagenais and Steelers player Jody Lehman also went to the papers to complain about Voth and said he should be banned. Voth picked up 12 games as a result of the incident. On his return from suspension Voth would fight Panthers Kevin Bergin, Adam Stefishen, Kyle Bruce, Jonathan Weaver and former NHL enforcer Chris McAllister twice before the season ended. Putting up a league high of (333 PIMS).
2009-2010 Voth was again in suspension trouble with the EIHL early on after a brawl with the Hull Stingrays in Cardiff. Rays tough guy Adam Knight went after Devils agitator Tylor Michel late in the game, Voth came in 3rd man resulting in a brawl. Once this was over both players were sent to the dressing rooms but neither went and ended up having an off the ice fight behind the two teams benches. The EIHL handed both Knight and Voth 5 game bans. Voth's next fight in the EIHL that season was against long time AHL enforcer and now a Giant, Sean McMorrow. Voth got dropped by punch from the Giants enforcer in the Odyssey arena Belfast in their fight. Voth then fought McMorrow again a few weeks later in Belfast, and they fought a 3rd time in Cardiff with Voth getting the better of McMorrow this time around. Brad Voth also fought rival Derek Campbell twice, Jason Robinson, Dominic D'Amour, Brad Cruikshank in 09/10, finishing the season with a league high of (347 PIMS). Voth was unlucky not to be picking up another trophy this season as the Devils came up just short in the Play-off finals and the C.C Cup.
2010-2011 Voth had another good season for the Devils in front of goal, scoring 22 times in 50 games as the Devils pushed all season long for their 1st EIHL Championship. They eventual finished runners up to the Sheffield Steelers in the EIHL title race and lost out in the play-off finals to the Nottingham Panthers. Voth again lead the Devils in penalty minutes and also put up another 6 fights in the EIHL against Neil Clark, Mark Nebus, Mike Hoffman, Scott Langdon and Jozef Sladok.
Voth's final season with the Devils in the EIHL was in 2011-2012. He fought a few times in 11/12 fighting Giants Adam Keefe and the Stars Brennan Turner. He also dropped the gloves on a couple of occasions against rival Derek Campbell. His final season was cut short due to an injury.
Brad Voth over his time in the EIHL became one of the Greats of the Cardiff Devils ice hockey team. He was not only an enforcer for the Devils but was the franchise player for many years. He was not only a tough enforcer but one that could play as well. During his time in the UK Vother was a feared hard hitting player who holds the record for 'Most ever fights in the EIHL' and also hold the record for the 'All time EIHL penalty minutes'.
The names on his fight card from North America include Derek Boogaard, Steve MacIntyre, Eric Godard, Colton Orr, Mel Angelstad, Graham Belak, Mike Varhaug, Martin Grenier, David Koci, Andrew Peters, Trevor Ettinger, Rob Skrlac and many more top enforcer's.
While in the EIHL Voth fought Chris McAllister, Brett Clouthier, Sean McMorrow, Mike Hoffman, Jeremy Cornish, Andre Payette, Adam Stefishen, Ryan Shmyr, Fredrik Oduya, Shawn Skiehar, Rumun Ndur, Brad Cruikshank, Jason Bowen, Jason Robinson, Derek Campbell, Paul Ferone, Regan Darby, Kevin Bergin, Steve Munn, Kyle Bruce, Adam Knight, Dominic D'Amour, Scott Langdon, Jozef Sladok, Neil Clark and Mike Nebus.
