McPherson spent 5 years in the CIS with the Lakehead University Thunderwolves where he consistently put points on the board. From 114 games he produced 145 points, 66 goals and 79 assists, for a points per game average of 1.27. He was selected for the 2007/08 CIS (OUA West) First All-Star Team and 2008/09 CIS (OUA West) Second All-Star Team.
The 6' 1" winger made an impressive start to his professional career too. In 2011/12 he scored 33 times, with 24 assist, for a total of 57 points in 57 regular season appearances for Gardiner Conference rivals the Braehead Clan. Dundee Stars' forwards Mike Wirll and Vince Connon also played for the Clan in that season.
