Favourite 5 EIHL Fights.
Ashley March from 'March Hockey' has asked EIHL fans for their favourite EIHL fights. So I've got my 5 favourite fights from the EIHL and here they are in reverse order.
#5.. 20/9/08 .. Nottingham v Sheffield
Bruce Richardson v Ryan Finnery
Back when the Panthers v Steelers games still had the big rival edge to them that unfortunately has all but gone now in today's games we had an opening face off fight between two tough competitors.
Both teams agitators Bruce Richardson & Ryan Finnerty line up at the opening face-off. These two are both mirror images of themselves in the way they play in your face agitating physical hockey, both are centres & both are similar in size and build. Both teams sets of fans know what is coming up and are already on their feet cheering with anticipation of whats to come. The puck drops and the gloves and helmets are removed by both guys.
Richardson comes in first and lands a nice right hand to start the fight off. Finnerty then throws a right hand back that misses and Richardson starts to get the upper hand landing about five rights on Finnerty. Finnerty then gets himself in a better position and the two of them go toe to toe with right hands. Finnerty lands the better in this exchange and then pulls forward on Richardson who loses balance and falls to the ice. The lino's then quickly come in to split them up.
Great even fight that sparked the crowd. This would be the 1st of 3 good fights between these pair in the EIHL.

#4..30/11/07.. Newcastle v Nottingham
Derek Campbell v Kevin Bergin
These two had been playing in the EIHL the previous season, Campbell with the Manchester Phoenix & Bergin with the Basingstoke Bison, and Outside of the heavyweights in the EIHL they were considered two of the better fighters in the league. Both were also very good players capable of putting up points for their respective team.
Late in the game after some chirping between the pair they line up beside one another at a face-off. The Fights starts with both fighters throwing some wild punches, Campbell lands some lefts and Bergin lands some good rights. Both fighters then have trouble staying on their skates, first Campbell slips about and then Bergin falls to the ice. When Bergin gets up, he and Campbell go toe to toe with right hands, each landing six punches. This exchange had the crowd on there feet roaring with approval.
They then tie each other up, both then try to get an arm free. Bergin then lands a right hand and Campbell responds with a decent right hand as well, Bergin then lands another two rights before Campbell is able to get Bergin's jersey up and over his face.
Even though Bergin cant see where he is punching, he lands a straight right hand on Campbell. Bergin then pops his head out of the jersey, Campbell then just misses with a big right. Campbell then falls backwards to the ice, with Bergin then falling forward and coming down on top of Campbell.
This was one of the best fights in the league that season, both fighters going toe to toe at a stage in the fight.

#3.. 12/9/07.. Sheffield v Nottingham
Jeremy Cornish v Ryan Shmyr
First Steelers v Panthers game of the 2007-2008 season and about half way through the 2nd period the heavyweights line up beside one another at a face-off. Its clear they are going to fight and as soon as the puck drops to the ice, both guy's drop the gloves and remove their helmets before squaring off at the blue line. They circle each other with Shmyr standing with his right arm back ready to throw and Cornish with the left arm back.
They then come together and Shmyr lands three good rights as they start to go toe to toe. Cornish is throwing lefts hands and Shmyr throwing rights. Shmyr lands some good punches at the start of this exchange, but Cornish comes back and lands some very good lefts on Shmyr. Cornish punches are full swings now, while Shmyr's is more of a jabbing motion with both landing lots of good punches in this exchange.
Shmyr then swaps hands quickly so he's now throwing with his left arm and the two trade left hand punches, before Shmyr lands the best punch of the fight a left cross that stuns Cornish a bit. Cornish comes back with another left and lands two more before they swap a solid left hand each. They then come in tight and grab a hold of each other, Shmyr then smiles at Cornish as the two fighters are split apart by the lino's. Cornish then kisses the Steelers logo and plays up for the crowd as he go's to the penalty box.
I called this fight a draw as both land about the same amount of punches in this fight. Cornish I'd say got slightly the better of the toe to toe exchange at the start, before Shmyr changes hands and starts to take over and landed a good left that stunned Cornish, but Cornish then came back again and the two landed a few good punches at the end of the fight.
Very good fight between two of the top fighters over here in the EIHL in 2007-2008.

#2.. 12/9/10.. Dundee Stars v Nottingham Panthers
Sean McMorrow v Alex Penner
''The Sheriff'' vs ''Weapon X'' was the fight that every EIHL fight fans was looking forward to most over the weekend, and everyone one knew it was a cert from the opening face off. Both tough guys had been on BBC radio Sheffield earlier in the week talking to host David Simms about what to expect in this game. There was much mutual respect shown between the pair in the good natured exchanges on the show. But both guys knew come game time on Sunday they would be fighting from the face off and that's exactly what happened. The fight more than lived up to the hype, which was good to see, and was one of the best heavyweight bout's we have seen in the EIHL for quite a while.
Sean McMorrow got off to a good start in the fight landing some fast left hands on Alex Penner.. Penner again showed why he is one of the toughest guys in the league this season by taking the punches on the chin and then firing back with right hands of his own. The two fighters then went toe to toe with both throwing hard right hands before they then tied up ending the fight.
Great heavyweight bout between the EIHL champ from the previous season Sean McMorrow & Alex Penner who was voted number one in 2010-2011.

#1..23/3/05.. Coventry v London
Wade Belak v Eric Cairns
NHL lock-out in 2004-2005 saw two of the toughest guys in the show coming to the UK to play hockey for the two toughest teams in the league that season Coventry Blaze and the London Racers. EIHL fans had been hoping all season to see these two drop the gloves but it was not until the last game between the sides that season that they fought and it was one to remember.
Payette chases the puck down the ice to save an icing call but he is two late and the whistle goes, but Payette continue to follow the puck into the boards when he bumps Cairns. Cairns is not happy about this and slashes Payette around the legs with his stick and Cairns gets called for the penalty against Andre Payette. So as Cairns skates away he gives Payette another slash right in front of the ref, so and the ref gives Cairns another penalty. Cairns is pissed and bumps into the ref on purpose so the ref then throws Cairns out of the game.
Cairns has really lost the plot now and skates after the ref, and one of the lino's has to hold him back. Cairns is not happy and glove punches the lino in the chest and breaks free. He skates down the ice after the ref but is held back by a few of the London guys, and they guide him away from the ref.
He then skates over to where the puck is at and pretends to line up a shot at the ref, he skates back down the ice and has a few more words to say to the ref, before the London players lead him away again.
It looks like he is finally going to leave the ice when all of a sudden he skates towards the Coventry bench at speed, throwing a huge punch at Andre Payette who is sitting on the bench. Payette falls back and this gathers a crowd of players in front of the Blaze bench, Wade Belak fights his way threw the crowd to get at Cairns.
All the fans in our league have been waiting the whole season for this fight between two of the best NHL enforcer's at that time, these two guys where only here because of and NHL shut out that season. Their fight did not let us down.
Once Belak has pushed his way through the crowd and got to Cairns he throws a big right that lands and follows up with some jersey jabs and lands a left / right combination and pulls Cairns jersey over his head. Cairns pops his head out quickly from the jersey and throws 2 right hands that just miss but he then lands with a good right, Belak gives him a few more jersey jabs before Cairns breaks out of his jersey and lands a right.
Belak then slips on a elbow pad and goes down to his hands and knees bringing Cairns down as well, Cairns is up fast and lands a right and Belak slips as he is tries getting up, and falls down to his hands and knees again. Cairns lands another right before Belak get to his skates and the two grab on.
They both then miss with rights and Belak lands some more jabs as Cairns throws a few rights hands back, Belak lands a good right and Cairns lands a jab they both swing and miss with rights and both land a few more jabs. They are getting tired at this stage and Cairns swings a big right that goes over the top of Belak's head, Cairns then throws a few very weak rights at the end before the lino's come in and separate them.
They skate apart and as Cairns is leaving for the tunnel, he hits a Blaze player who is tied up with another London guy near the tunnel door, Coventry's coach sees this and throws a water bottle at Cairns, so the London bench throws a stick back at the Blaze's bench. Some fans try to get at Cairns as he leaves but are held back by security.
The whole incident from start to finish is why this is my favourite EIHL fight of all time. The fact its two of the toughest guys in hockey at that time fighting in the UK also made it special in my books.
Ashley March from 'March Hockey' has asked EIHL fans for their favourite EIHL fights. So I've got my 5 favourite fights from the EIHL and here they are in reverse order.
